Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government ?rehabilitation camp.? She might have survived the mysterious disease that?s killed most of America?s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she?s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her?East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can?t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.

When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.

Fun tidbit: This was a book club pick. We chatted with the author during book club, and she mentioned that the titles of the books were going to be a complete sentence. I find that uber cool!

This book made me immediately think of the show Heroes. It was very reminiscent of the tragic experiences those characters endured because of their uniqueness. I think this book would make an excellent action-packed movie and I think Hollywood needs to jump on it. The world is dark, adults have lost their damn minds, and as usual, take extreme measures. Apparently, some crazy disease called Idiopathic Adolescent Acute Neurodegeneration, was wreaking havoc on the youth of the world. Many died and the ones that were left behind were becoming…different. The world quickly became frightened of these leftover children and their new abilities, so they did what humans ALWAYS do when they are scared or don’t understand something: they locked up the kids in concentration camps or prisons. The children were grouped into colors based on their abilities. Some were able to control elements or objects. The more dangerous children could control minds. These Oranges were sought out via strategic testing and killed due to their lethality.

Ruby is more than what we see on the surface, and when it comes time for her test, she does what any scared, lonely child would: she lies and manipulates her way to safety. After a nerve-racking escape attempt, Ruby finds herself on the outside. She is with people she does not know and is unsure who to trust. She endures a dangerous journey with a group of kids she meets, kids just like her who are searching for the man who can lead them to a safe haven. I liked Ruby’s voice. She was easy to connect with and believe, as she was going through many of the motions that teenagers experience. And she had such innocence and fragility, especially when it came to her powers and how they have tragically affected her own personal life.

Liam stood out to me. In fact, I adore him and his intelligence, tenderness, protectiveness and the way he says darlin’. His care and concern for young, lonely, lost Suzume made my heart soar with happiness and joy. He did not have to help her. She likely slowed him down at times, and she had her own uncontrollable power to deal with. But he helped her. He cared for and nurtured her. I cannot forget that. And then he lets Ruby in. Their relationship develops slowly and under the radar, but there are moments that made me sigh. Like page 312. THAT SCENE. ? He is so swoon-worthy. *sigh*

The banter between Chubs and Liam is epic. Holy crap, I love these two boys something fierce and they should never, ever be apart. They are so loyal and dedicated. Chubs doesn’t let Ruby in easily, and is pretty damn loud and clear about his feelings regarding her intrusion in their lives. However, Chubs being who he is, eventually breaks when he realizes Ruby is the real deal. All Chubs wants is to keep his people safe, at any cost. By the end of the story, Chubs was probably the most incredible character. And Suzume, who will grab your heart in her adorable little rubber-gloved hands and squeeze the love right out of you. What a freakin sweet, scared, wanting nothing more than to be loved and protected, child. I can haz one?

The ending broke my heart. I was totally freaking out and I pray that things get better in the next book. I NEED THINGS TO GET BETTER, plzkthx.

In the life of Smash

Hello, bloggers and readers! I apologize for being so distant lately. I have not been interested in the internet or social media, but I think it will pass. I have just been doing so many other things lately, and enjoying life, in general. I am also in a review slump, so staying away from the computer at night has a lot to do with me not wanting to face reviews. Ha. I’ve been in a scrapbook mood and have really not cared about writing reviews. It’s ok. I’m not punishing myself for it. They will get done.

Let’s see. There is ONE WEEK left of school. I will be sad to see some of these mucnkins go, but I am SO PROUD of many of them for overcoming shit this year.

I’ve been Smash Booking, which is just a variation of scrapbooking. I am enjoying it.

I also made a Mother’s Day gift that I am truly proud of. It’s a memory file!

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 13th and runs through Sunday, May 19th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 7.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

Good day, Bout Of Bookers! You are almost to the finish line. I hope you have met or exceeded your goals, and if you haven’t, I hope you had fun anyway because that is the ENTIRE point. Right, Amanda? And now, let’s get on to the challenge at hand, shall we. I present thee with…

GENRE BOOK SPINE POETRY

Yes, I said GENRE Book Spine Poetry. That means you have to choose one GENRE, any genre, and use only those books to create your poem. It sounds difficult but it’s hella fun going through your books and trying to figure something out. You can only use as many extra words as you have books. For example, if you have 10 books, you can only use 10 extra words in your poem. I chose Young Adult as a whole, no sub-genres. Here is my example:

Got questions? Tweet them to me.

Giveaway Details

This challenge and prize is open to Bout of Books 7.0 participants only. I will be checking on the validity of your entry. Don’t cheat, yo.

The challenge will be open for 24 hours, so at midnight CST on Sunday 5/19/13, the pumpkin shall cease to exist!

To enter, please post your awesome creation on your blog, Goodreads page, Facebook page, etc, and post your link in the comments here. Or, if you don’t have a place to post it, you can put the poem in the comment.

A picture helps me determine that you used only one genre of books because I can easily investigate a book I do not know. If you chose not to do a picture, please make sure you have book titles and authors listed.

ONE (1) winner will be chosen randomly (via the WordPress plugin “Pick Giveaway Winner”) to win a book of their choice under $10 from Amazon or Book Depository, as long as they ship to you.

The winner will be contacted Sunday 5/19/13 and will have 48 hours to respond with their book choice, link and address.

HAVE FUN AND GET CREATIVE.

—

Let?s get personal (but respectfully so) and learn more about one another! Each week, a different question will be posted along with a place to link up your posts and visit other people?s responses. This meme is definitely meant to bring out conversation and meet new people. So, Let’s Talk!

Today’s Question:

Have you ever been inspired to do something creative by reading about it in a book? Examples cooking, baking, trying a new food or drink, making jewelry, designing clothes or shoes and even bookish inspired vacations.

YES! I think Gin Blanco is to blame for my sudden interest in baking! Of course, they only thing I’ve tried is cupcakes, which I don’t ever recall Gin making, actually, but I’m blaming her anyway. :Þ I also salivate over BBQ in her books but I do NOT like sweet Southern BBQ. I like my BBQ vinegar-based. As far as vacations go, I want to go back to London after reading Meant to Be, and I want to go to Ireland and Scotland and learn more about ancient Celtic culture after reading Iron Druid books, and I DEFINITELY want to head to Australia and meet up with Gavin and Sinnder from Just Breathe trilogy. No telling what would happen…

His chiseled body and dark, intensely masculine energy draw her like a moth to a flame. But Frankie has been burned before, and now a mysterious figure from her troubled past has resurfaced with a terrifying new threat. Can she trust Jake not only with her heart but with her very life?

Jake?s hunger to possess this beautiful redhead goes beyond searing desire. He?s a vampire, and his very existence depends on bonding with a mate. He aches to ravish Frankie, but he must take it slow?for what he will ask of her will require profound sacrifice even as it gives her unimaginable pleasure. And once he has claimed her?body and soul?Jake will go to any lengths to protect her.

A Vampire’s Salvation is the first novella in Virna DePaul’s Beyond Human series and tells the story of Jake and Frankie.

Jake is a vampire who is almost 200 years old and reaching a very important stage in his life. In the Beyond Human world a vampire who lives over 200 years without finding his or her mate lose their immortality and go insane. Fortunately for Jake, he found his mate, Franscesca, six months ago. He’s spent the last six months trying to keep his vampiric nature in check and let Frankie get to know him in the traditional human way.

Frankie is a human who works as a consultant for the Governor. She has spent her life dedicated to her career and has found it very rewarding. She had a traumatic event happen to her when she was a teenager which left her both emotionally and physically scarred. Her intimacy issues were never a problem until Jake started working security for the Governor. Now she can’t stop fantasizing about the huge, alpha male who makes her knees go weak without even trying. But Frankie is flawed so why would this big, gorgeous male ever want her?

With the novella format, world building was minimal so you don’t learn a lot about the vampires or their traditions. A Vampire’s Salvation was short, sweet, and smexy. The vampire mythology was a bit different than other books I’ve read and I immediately liked both Jake and Frankie. I look forward to reading more in the Beyond Human world and am curious who the next novella will be about. I give A Vampire’s Salvation 3 stars.

This Week’s Question:

Top Ten Books Dealing With Tough Subjects

Ohhh. I do love a good tough issue book. This is my list on Goodreads, and I’ve only read a smidgen of them.

A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah: This is a real life account of a young boy in Sierra Leone who was unwillingly recruited as a child soldier in the civil war. It’s an ugly story with an incredible ending.

What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day by Pearl Cleage: I had to read this book for an elective course I took on public health issues. It’s a story about a woman who is HIV positive and makes her way back to the small town she left years ago, to rekindle relationships and find herself.

House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III: You may have seen this movie, starring Jennifer Connelly and Sir Ben Kingsley. I enjoyed the movie a lot, but it is not as good as the book, which is chock full of intense emotions.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

by Stephen Chbosky: Awww. This book is so special. I want to hug Charlie close and never let him go.

Crank by Ellen Hopkins: I still can’t believe I haven’t read the rest of this series! This was my first venture into reading a novel written entirely in prose but it really adds to the intensity. Seeing the character slowly fall into bed with “the monster” was pretty horrifying.

White Oleander by Janet Fitch: I had to read this book for my Child Welfare elective. It was supposed to show the extreme side of foster care, but also proves that resiliency does exist.

Scars by Cheryl Rainfield: This book is worth a read, especially when you find out why this young lady harms herself they way she does. It’s horrifying but rings true about real life.

Stolen by Lucy Christopher: Holy Mindfuck, Batman. A book about a young girl who is kidnapped and taken to a secluded spot in the Australian desert to live with her captor will leave you feeling extremely uncomfortable. The way the book is written truly makes you flip the last page and feel the effects of Stockholm Syndrome.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green: WOW. This is a recent read for me and it packs a serious punch. A book about kids with cancer that is really a book about living life to the fullest. Lots of emotions, people.

Ordinary Beauty by Laura Wiess: One of the many books that book club chose that I would never have picked up otherwise, and I am so pleased that it graced my life. It shows the truly ugly side of mental illness and family discord, only to show that one caring person in a child’s life can truly make a difference.

This meme is definitely meant to bring out conversation and meet new people. So, Let’s Talk!

Today’s Question:

Do you take advantage of Freebies? or Do you think Freebies are a good selling tool for authors and publishers?

I DEFINITELY take advantage of freebies. Hey, they are FREE. However, I am unsure how much I actually read. I have 118 freereads to dig into one day. Some of them I grabbed because of their genre (zombies, dystopian, etc), others I grabbed because they are actually a book in a series I want to read. Some are just books that sounded interesting. Now that I’m noticing all these freereads, I should definitely join Why Buy The Cow next year.

Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.

Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind.

<del>I have busted my John Green…</del>I have broken John Green ground, finally! Thank you to everyone who voted for this book during my April book poll. As difficult as this book was, I thank you all for giving me the push to finally dive in. I am happy to have finally experienced John Green’s brilliance. He certainly knows how to tell a story, and more importantly, how to write characters.

Hazel and Augustus. I am not even sure what to say about these two characters that would prove the magnitude of their presence and spirit in this book. Both are afflicted with different types of cancers, in different stages and with different outcomes. Both have been through utter hell and continue to experience the physical and emotional pain and suffering of terminal illness. However, there are times where I would not have even remembered they were sick, had it not been for Hazel’s need for oxygen and Augustus’ limp. When they found one another, they both started to truly live again. And live they did. They had big moments and small moments and glorious moments and devastating moments. But they experienced them all together, basking in the glow of their new found love and respect. That “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health” marriage vow was never more apparent in any story than it was with Hazel and Augustus. And they were teenagers who were not married, nor thinking about it. There was just so much truth and honesty inside them both that it burst out to envelop the other. Not to mention, they were like two peas in a pod. It’s definitely hard to put into words the perfect imperfection these two characters were together.

And I just have to talk about Augustus all by his onesies. This young man was AH-mazing. He was full of lust for life, and despite his illness, lived life to the absolute fullest. Never once did I see negativity or pessimism cross this young man’s thoughts. He was romantic and nerdy and fun. He was also very compassionate and humble. This guy had it all, and I will never forget what a beautiful character he is, and how much he made my heart smile in this book.

This book was much more than a book about kids with cancer. It was about living life and taking risks and being in love and exploring the world and enjoying beauty and the inner strength people can muster when life hands them a basket full of lemons. Believe it or not, I did not ugly cry. My eyes teared up, and I put the book down numerous times to gather myself, but I did not sob myself to sleep. I held on tightly to the beauty of the character’s life-altering experiences, and it got me through the book. I am really happy that I’ve been digging my heels into YA contemporary books more than I ever have. There are some incredible gems out there and I look forward to reading all of John Green’s work.

Favorite Scene

?May I see you again?” he asked. There was an endearing nervousness in his voice.

I smiled. “Sure.”

“Tomorrow?” he asked.

“Patience, grasshopper,” I counseled. “You don’t want to seem overeager.

“Right, that’s why I said tomorrow,” he said. “I want to see you again tonight. But I’m willing to wait all night and much of tomorrow.” I rolled my eyes. “I’m serious,” he said.

“You don’t even know me,” I said. I grabbed the book from the center console. “How about I call you when I finish this?”

“But you don’t even have my phone number,” he said.

“I strongly suspect you wrote it in this book.”

He broke out into that goofy smile. “And you say we don’t know each other.”
