Lets Talk Lets Talk: 11/2/12

Welcome to the Let’s Talk weekly discussion meme!

Originally hosted by Melissa from i swim for oceans, Smash & Kt took her original inspiration, and made it their own, expanding it to more than just books. Let’s get personal (but respectfully so) and learn more about one another!  Each week, a different question will be posted along with a place to link up your posts and visit other people’s responses. This meme is definitely meant to bring out conversation and meet new people. So, Let’s Talk!

Today’s Question:

Be honest, do you ever get embarrassed by some of the posts from when you first started blogging due to the lessor quality? Yes, growth and experience is natural, but do you ever get the urge to go back and “fix” things?

Hells to the Yes! Every Bloggiesta, I find myself going back to old posts and tinkering. Since moving to WordPress and this vastly different blog design in March, I’ve had to change a lot of old posts. I am currently going back and formatting my old reviews to match my newer style. What a pain in the tuckus, yo! I still haven’t cleaned up all my broken links…LOL.

As far as fixing the actual content of things, of course I’d love for it to be better. I’m super proud of some of my newer reviews, but in a few years, I will look at them and have the same thoughts. Personally, I love going back and seeing how far I’ve come! It reminds me of my writing during my Master’s program. By the time I was done, I compared new and old papers and was really floored by the differences. We all grow with practice. Maybe not every review is worthy of an award, but if your personality shines through, it is a winner in my book!

If you have questions/ideas for future topics, feel free to share them here.

I’m not a book blogger, but I’ll to put in my two cents if you’ll have them.

Yes! And not just about blog posts. I hone my craft and become a better writer with each book I write, so I have that exact feeling with the stories I’ve previously published. I won’t go into detail, because I’ll just get wordy and ramble (you know how I can get) but the answer is definitely yes!

  2. Hell! Everytime a post goes live. I start berating myself…Why didn’t you write that review right when you finished reading it? It could have been better. More passionate. You lost the RIGHT words. Urgh?!?!?

  3. Kt says:

Having to go back and fix old posts is exactly why I keep hedging on not switching over to WordPress or updating my layout. It’s taken me so long to finally get things exactly the way I want them that I just don’t want to start over!

As far as your second point, seeing how far you have come is the best attitude to have! It’s will about growth!

  4. Great first question ladies!

I rambled in my post so I won’t repeat it here. Hmm…. maybe that rambling thing is something I need to work on too. ;)

  5. Rusty says:

Ha! I snorted out my coffee when I saw this on Facebook and had to come over and I second what MR has to say; it’s even suckier/more embarrassing/longer lasting when the embarrassing stuff you’ve written is in print! But I think that just means we’re all evolving in whatever we do, blogging, reviewing, writing, tinkering, whatever. Great post and topic for discussion, as always!!!

  6. Yes! This is me. My older reviews are TERRIBLE! I wish I could change them all, but then that would take away from my reading time, so I’m not even bothering.

I was thinking about what Matt said about being an author, so I thought about how this affects me being a musician. The majority of the music I’ve released has been done at home, so I have the benefit of listening back and tweaking however much I like. But there’s always that ONE THING that bugs me the instant a CD is released … and then I can’t go back and change anything.

BUT, I do think with anything, you can go over it with a fine tooth comb and sometimes you will never be happy. Sometimes you just have to let it go!

  7. Karen says:

I actually like some of my earlier reviews better.

I wasn’t so worried about getting them perfect. I didn’t think anyone was reading my blog lol

I was in a bad reading/blogging slump this past year and I see a lot of that negativity in my reviews. My earlier ones have that innocence about them if you know what I mean. i was less self conscious.

Great question! I’ll have to join this meme next week!

  8. Jennifer says:

Oh yikes, I didn’t even think of broken links! ;)

  9. OH I am so embarrassed by the content I have on my page from when I was first starting out. I leave it up though because I don’t want to forget how my blog got to where it is now. I think I am a much better writer! I don’t think I will ever change anything — other than graphics and broken links. It’s a part of my blog.

  10. I always think I should go back and fix some of my early posts, but never do. Luckily when I purchased my domain name I had only been blogging for a little over 4 months so I managed to fix all of the broken links in a few days. I knew if I didn’t do it right away I never would lol! Some of my early reviews are embarrassing, but that just shows my growth as a blogger I think. I love your blog and I think that it’s awesome chick!!

  11. Oh god yes! I cringe at my earlier reviews. I’ve deleted at least one review (I said that the only thing the book was good for was being a drink coaster.)

  12. Felicia says:

I think the only thing I have changed in my old stuff is the formatting and that was because of the blogger to wordpress move. Some were so unreadable it wasn’t even funny :)

I have to agree it is fun to see how far my writing and content has come over the years. Heck even from the start of the year till now! It is amazing how much we learn and absorb from others!

  13. I forever have an overwhelming urge to go back and ‘fix’ things. A few months ago I spent a whole day going back and reformatting all my old posts to match my new format – I was cross-eyed by the end of it!

I still have to tell myself sometimes to just let the old posts remain as they were originally so I can look back on them and see how things have changed, but….I still wanna ‘fix’!

Sorry I couldn’t join in this week (I have been five days without Internet….unthinkable!), hopefully next week :-D

  14. MAN, I totally forgot to do this last week!!! Do you have a schedule for the future posts?
