Amanda and Kelly always have the best ideas. This time, they’re challenging us to UNBREAK OUR FRAKIN SHELVES, yo. You can read all about it here, but the main goals are:
Part 1: Actively organize, categorize, and otherwise be brutally realistic about the books you have in your pile.
Part 2: Actively work on bringing that TBR pile down to something that isn’t threatening you with bodily harm if you don’t start reading it.
It’s quite daunting to organize the books we have to read, and I have been putting off this challenge because I don’t even know where to begin. However, I’ve gotten a ton of great ideas from participants. Of course, if I get a job, all of this will likely go down the shitter because I will little time to do it all, but at least it’s still a list to keep on ticking.
Smash Organizes
Export and back up my GR listsDelete free ebooks from GR & Kisten that no longer interest me- Started with 281…to 254. Hey, it’s something!
Copy Kelly & Amanda and making a freebie ebook shelve on GR- Only 96?
Delete books off my TBR that no longer interest me- Started with 1744 and got it down to 1590. I did end up adding books too, like the rest of the books in a series, etc, so it ended up not bringing the number down much as much as I hoped, but still a lot!
Update my Signed shelf on GRUpdate my Gifted shelf on GRUpdate my Review Queue and Review Request Complete shelves on GR- Organize my Kindle better. What IS the best way?

Smash gets Personal
- My current Owned TBR list is at 477. If I could in ANY WAY get that under 400, that would rock. However, I don’t see it happening, but it’s a goal nonetheless.
- I’ve already stopped accepting review requests. I no longer go on NetGalley, because that leads to hella trouble. Only authors I’ve worked with in the past are on my OK list until much further notice. I have too many books to read and need to focus more on my own shelves
- Stop buying books, even if that means I have to wait to read a hot book when the library doesn’t carry it. *sniff* I have almost 5oo books to read. No more buying. Seriously.
- Donate more. I recently gave 3 ARCs to ARCycling and have a few on Paperback Swap. Feels good.

Go Smash! You can do it!
Personally, I find it difficult to do a strict ban on buying books. I’d rather do something where I only buy books on occasion, and I have to balance it out somewhere in my TBR list (so I have to read a book to add a book). I also have a rule that I can’t spend more on books than I make from my business in a month. It’s the latter rule that keeps me from spending.
That rule rocks…for someone with an income. I should not be spending ANY money on books, and neither T nor I can justify it when I have so many to read. T’s loans repayment start back in November. If I’m not working, shits about to get tough round here!
The way my business is going, I probably won’t make any money until next month, so… for now it’s like a very effective book buying ban. I’ve been lucky to win a couple gift cards, which is how I’ve been getting books lately. Or I download freebies.
I am insanely jealous of your organizational skills and how pretty and well laid out your post is — ESPECIALLY WITH PROGRESS BARS! AHH!
Anyways, just wanted to say YOU CAN DO IT!
Well thank you! And thank Amanda for the cool progress bars. She clued me in to the ProgPress plugin.
When I went through all the Kindle freebies I had and got rid of the ones I DLed all willy nilly in the beginning, I made a HUGE dent in my TBR pile. Like, 100 books worth. It feels so freeing when you see that number go down. *dances a bit*
Excellent goals! Anything I can do to help out, I’m here for you. We have a coupe of books we could read in tandem, if that works for you. =D
Thank you chica! I’m pretty serious about these goals. *determined face* I am always up for reading in tandem!
YES YES YES!!!!
You are awesome! I had 500+ owned books that I had to read and got rid of 200 of them. I’ve also decided that I’m NOT buying books unless I’ve read them and loved them — I buy way too many that suck. GO LIBRARIES!! And no review books! I’m with you on that.
Good luck with all your goals! I’m hoping to get all my review books done by the end of the year, too.
YOU CAN DO THIS!!
200 books gone? So sad. *sniff* We definitely need to support our libraries more! Such an important piece of our communities.
Good luck to you!!! WE CAN DO IT!
I love this idea. I am trying to only buy books that my library does not carry to reduce the amount of books I am buying but I still need to work on the amount of books I get from the library or that I buy from Kobo. Good luck on your goal!
It’s tough, Sara! We love to collect, but I need to just get over it. I have so many that need read already. I need to utilize the library more, but the few titles I’ve looked for, they do not carry.
Great Job! I didn’t know about this challenge ! Keep on with it! I’m rooting for you!
You should join us. And thank you!
Oh my gosh I need to this. I, however, don’t know how I can do this between school and work…but I am going to try.
Yay for organizing. I’m excited about that. And I love your progress bars. I want to figure out how to do those.
