This Week’s Question:
Top Ten Books For People Who Like Patricia Briggs
Do you dig Mercy and Urban Fantasy? Well, then you should check out these other authors and their awesome heroines.
- Kim Harrison‘s The Hollows is one of the best urban fantasy series I’ve come across. The characterization, plot and world-building is deliciously creative. Plus, there are demons and pixies that I seriously want to invite over for drinks.
- Rachel Caine‘s Weather Warden series. I gushed about it here. Weather-wielding bad assery, plus some hot djinns!
- Carolyn Crane‘s Disillusionists is a world that is uber fun to play in, though beware: you don’t know who the hell to trust! This series is a wildly refreshing concept for the Urban Fantasy genre.
- Karen Marie Moning‘s Fever series will send your temperature soaring as you start jonesing for Jericho Z. Barrons. Oh, and the Fae lore and Irish setting is fab, too!
- Carrie Vaughn‘s Kitty Norville series is hella entertaining. I really enjoy Kitty as a character and find her to be admirable and tough, with just the touch of broken soul that I love to see.
- Rachel Vincent‘s Shifter series is another serious favorite. RV’s writing sucks you in and spits you out. Anyone who can make me sob and scream and laugh over and over again deserves a gold star. I really miss this series. *sniff*
- J.A. Saare‘s Rhiannon’s Law series is loaded with ass kickery. Rhiannon has a mouth on her that brings smiles upon smiles to my face, and her ugly background has led her down a path of destruction. But she still makes time for love, albeit painful still. I need to have drink with her. plzkthx.
- While I’ve only read 2 books of Vicki Pettersson‘s Signs of the Zodiac series, I was uber impressed with the world-building, and loved the parallel worlds and super hero connection.
- I shall get flogged for this one, I’m sure. Only one book into the Downside Ghost series (I KNOW! I KNOW!), it is easy to see why Stacia Kane‘s series brings about serious emotion and opinion. Chess is a heroine unlike any I’ve come across, and just might be the most broken yet passionate female in Urban Fantasy.
- I just started Jennifer Estep‘s Elemental Assassin series and Gin is going in my UBER FUCKING AWESOME bin. I love her gritty, dark, determined personality, sprinkled with morals and standards. Another broken chic on a serious mission.
Have you read any of these series? Did I hook, line and sink you?

I like your list & I haven’t read a lot of these that actually makes me really excited, because I’ll never run out of good books to read. I really need to check out Estep.
Ohhh. I do hope you decide to read all of them. And Yes, Gin Blanco is one of the most bad ass heroines I’ve come across in UF! She will impress you, and make you sad. She is broken and hard and ruthless, but her shell is bound to crack!
I haven’t read any of these….yet. The Mercy series is my first toe in the water with UF. Now I know where to go next! =)
I have read 4 of those series! Yeah me! Actually I am curprised though I do think I have the first book of the other 6 as they are all on my TBR!
YAY! I hope you enjoy them all.
Have to add Marjorie M. Liu’s Darkness Calls, Ilona Andrew’s Kate Daniels series, and Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series to the mix. Great list!
I haven’t read Kate Daniels yet, but she will definitely be added to the list. I don’t consider Frost’s series UF, more PNR in my eyes, but OH so good. I have yet to read anything by Liu!
Very true. Frost is that strange line between UF and PNR. I think she calls her own work UF Romance.
Oh, based on your list, I think you’ll love Liu.
Yes, Frost is on the cusp of both genres, isn’t she? I have Liu’s Hunter Kiss on my TBR. Those covers are kick ass!
Great list and I am also a fan of Patricia Briggs! I’ve read 4 of the ones you’ve got listed (Hollows, Fever, Kitty Norville,Shifter)! I also have 4 out of the 5 Downside Ghosts books on my bookshelf TBR. I agree with Tina about the Kate Daniels series. The first book took some time to get into, but from book two on, I was hooked! I think each books gets better & better
Yea, I tried the first Kate Daniels book some time ago and put it down. I will definitely try it again because of the huge fan base it has. Plus, I want to meet Curran!
A to the men regarding Chess. My love of the Downside Ghosts series (and Chess) caught me completely by surprise. I didn’t think I’d like a drug addict heroine. I was wrong. So wrong.
I always recommend Kalayna Price’s Haven series to people who like Patricia Briggs. And don’t forget the Alpha and Omega books! They’re set in the Mercy Thompson universe, but have different main characters.
I think Chess is a character that will make a lot of people do a double take. I LOVE that about her.
Yea, I still haven’t read the Alpha and Omega books! Of course, I haven’t finished the Mercy books either. *sigh*
It is sad that I own most of those series and have yet to start them other than the Downside Ghosts series which I’ve only read two books of but really really love. I encourage you to read book two asap because it was beyond amazing more than 5/5 for me.
Thanks for the awesome list.
That series is on my summer reading list. Maybe I’ll start them next…
I haven’t read any of these but I do want to read some books by Karen Marie Moning, Rachel Vincent, and Jennifer Estep! Hopefully I’ll be able to get to them soon! Great list, and thanks for stopping by my Top Ten Tuesday!
Yes! You should definitely read all of those authors.
