Week 2
Date: 7/18/12
Smash: That opening number was really interesting. T called Nappy Tabs as the choreographer. I couldn’t figure out who it was. It had a little bit of everyone. I am so nervous about how this new set-up is going to go! 4 people are going home tonight!
Oh, and I want those dance stamps!
Jen: Dude, so am I! I’ve been trying to figure out the logistics since they made the announcement. The opening number was amazing. I hear it was in fact a Nappy Tabs routine which surprises the crap out of me. I thought it might have been a Sonya Tayeh number. It’s amazing to see how they’ve grown as choreographers. LMAO! Christmas is right around the corner. ;-)
Contestants: Cole & Lindsay | Choreographer: Chris Scott | Style: Hip Hop
Smash: The choreography wasn’t all that but it was a cute, fun routine. I think what I was most impressed with was Cole’s characterization! He should act. I told T that he is going to go far, if not win, this competition. I can feel it. Adam’s commentary had me giggling like a mofo.
Jen: The only thing I liked about that routine was how well Cole portrayed his character. It was almost kind of creepy.
Contestants: Amelia & Will | Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh | Style: Contemporary
Smash: The violin was haunting! Music really affects how I feel about a dance routine. I think the dancing was well executed. I just adore Amelia.
Jen: I love this duo but, I wasn’t sure if I liked the routine until the second time I watched it. They pulled off some incredible moves.
Contestants: Amber & Nick | Choreographer: Miriam Larici & Leonardo Barrionuevo | Style: Tango
Smash: For a girl who just danced in heels for the first time last week, I have to give Amber series props for this number. She impressed me. And damn her muscles are just ridiculous! Nick still creeps me out…that guyliner made it worse!
Jen: LOL! I definitely have to agree on the guyliner. I was definitely impressed with their Tango though. It was hot, hot, hot!
Contestants: Audrey & Matthew | Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh| Style: Jazz
Smash: Does anyone else think Audrey and Matthew look like siblings? Anywho, this wasn’t the most captivating routine, but they showed great technical skill and the song kicked ass! Also, anytime Nigel says the word stank, I laugh my tuckus off.
Jen: This was one of my favorites of the night. I love when Sonya gives her couple powerful numbers, especially when they can deliver on them. These two most definitely did. What can I say? They’re my faves. And no I don’t think they look like siblings. Do they?
Contestants: Janelle & Dareian | Choreographer: Chris Scott | Style: Lyrical Hip-Hop
Smash: If you did not awwwww your way through this routine, you have no soul! Heh. So, it wasn’t the most challenging routine, but it was damn adorable. I mean really adorable. And that kiss! Woot. Janelle is another favorite of mine.
Jen: Then call me soulless because I thought that routine was cheesetastic….in a bad way. I absolutely love Dareian but, I have yet to make any kind of connection to Janelle. *hides behind desk*
Contestants: Janaya & Brandon | Choreographer: Sean Cheesman | Style: Broadway
Smash: Does Brandon remind anyone else of Donald Faison, aka Turk from Scrubs? I swear, when Brandon smiles, that is the first person that pops into my head! Both smiles are fab smiles, by the way. Anywho, this was an entertaining routine with great characterization, but it didn’t blow my socks off. I love the inverted foot hook loopty-loo thingie Janaya did. I’ve never seen that before!
Jen: Holy crap you’re totally on point with the Donald Faison comparison. I loved this routine. I thought they portrayed their characters really, really well. I also thought it was hella entertaining.
Contestants: Cyrus & Eliana | Choreographer: Jive | Style: Tony Meredith
Smash: *face palm* Oh geez. I do love Cyrus but I can be honest and state he is the least experienced and technical dancer on the show. It definitely showed in this routine. Homeboy never quit smiling though! I didn’t feel his serious commitment to this number, like I did last week. Eliana is still my favorite girl.
Jen: I hate to say this but, it was just a matter of time before this happened. Maaaad props to Eliana for not letting it phase her and pulling out a fantastic routine.
Contestants: Alexa & Daniel | Choreographer: Dee Caspary | Style: Contemporary
Smash: *sigh* No connection. Ever with these two. They are ridiculously great technical dancers, but I just cannot buy into their routines. The music was frakkin gorgeous and the execution was spot-on, but I could honestly take em or leave em. :/
Jen: Dead. On. Arrival. That is all.
Contestants: Tiffany & George | Choreographer: Tony Meredith | Style: Foxtrot
Smash: This wasn’t very memorable for me. I don’t have a whole lot to say. I still adore George.
Jen: I really liked their routine. They looked like they were having an amazing time which in turn made me feel like I was having a good time.
Contestants: Whitney & Chehon | Choreographer: Nakul Dev Mahajan | Style: Bollywood
Smash: I’m such a fan of this genre. It is so aesthetically pleasing and athletically challenging. I liked Whitney better but T said Chehon danced better. Whatever. They did it well, together.
Jen: I’m a huge fan of Bollywood too. It excites me when the dancers execute it well. I’m with you Ash. I feel like Whitney did a better job.
RESULTS
2 boys and 2 girls are being sent home this week.
Bottom 3 Girls: Janaya, Alexa and Whitney
Bottom 3 Boys: Nick, Daniel and Chehon
Smash: I think they made the right choice. I think Alexa dances beautifully but she is lacking emotional connection with herself and thus, with all of us. I will miss Janaya. I will not miss Nick..lol. And Daniel never stood out to me. Not to say they aren’t all fantastic, but I think the judges saved the best out of the 6.
Jen: I’m sad because this episode failed to wow me. There were really good routines but, nothing that I’d write home to Mom about. Last season set the bar really high and I just don’t feel this group is there yet. Maybe I’m asking for too much though. *sigh* Anywhoozle, I agree with the judges decision too. I’m sad for Janaya because I thought she had improved from last week. I, too, will not be missing Nick. LOL!

I lurved the opening number and was pleasantly surprised it was Nappy Tabs. It was my favorite dance of the night and I hope they do more in this style.
As far as the individual performances go, I was underwhelmed. The only ones I really enjoyed were Amelia & Will, Audrey & Matthew, and Whitney & Chehon.
Though I wasn’t impressed with their number as a whole, Eliana is still by far my favorite of the girls. She is hella talented and I look forward to seeing her dance again. I’m just afraid that as long as she’s paired with Cyrus (who I love but don’t think is doing well in this competition) that she isn’t going to shine.
I’m not a fan of the format this year. I don’t like having to wait a week for the results and it sucks that we don’t get two nights of SYTYCD per week. Why the frak do they keep changing the format anyway? Stupid FOX executives can suck it. Hopefully next week will be better.
