As a general rule I am letting things go from basic ideas that I have written down to specifics that are decided upon as I write. So I know how magic works but there are elements of the magic system that are being fleshed out during the writing process. The same is true of things like the geography. General terrain may be something like temperate forest, but the specifics are up to the needs of the scene. Everything is is written for a reason in my opinion, so I try and make sure that I am holding myself accountable as I construct the story.

Very interesting to get the authors viewpoint on how and when they reveal the various elements of the world they are building. I would like to know how much of the various aspects of the alternative world are actually fleshed out in the writers mind or notes before they actually begin writing- do new aspects come up as they write, or do they have a fixed idea and write within that world?

Awesome guest post! Definitely refreshing to see an author cognizant about the differences between Showing a world and infodumping it. Novels work so much better when the reader is allowed to discover the nuances of the world, rather than having all the details shoved down their throats.

Smiles!
